MW4 Prestige and Camo Grind Revealed: Classic vs Regular, 1,000 Master Levels, and a Head Start in DMZ Today
The grind for Modern Warfare 4 starts today. DMZ Early Access goes live globally at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) on Tuesday, October 20 for digital pre-orders, per Call of Duty Updates. The night before, Infinity Ward published its full Progression and Prestige launch guide. Its key line for early players: weapon levels, attachments and camos you earn in DMZ this week will be available in Multiplayer when the game launches on October 23.
Classic vs Regular Prestige: pick your path every time
We first covered the two Prestige paths as a headline feature. Now the official blog has the full rules. After you hit Level 55, you choose between them, and you choose again at every new Prestige:
- Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress. In return you get a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics.
- Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but keeps every unlock and loadout.
The token lets you keep one Level Unlock item for good, across every future reset. Infinity Ward's own tip is to spend it on perks, field upgrades, killstreaks or equipment rather than weapons, because buying a weapon blueprint already unlocks the base gun permanently.
A tour of Infinity Ward history, then 1,000 levels
There are 10 Prestige levels, and each one is themed around a past Infinity Ward game. Prestige 1 starts with the original Call of Duty (2003) and ends with a Mosin-Nagant blueprint. Prestige 10 celebrates MW4 itself. After that comes Prestige Master, which runs all the way to Level 1,000. It has a "Paragon" Operator skin, unlockable level colors, and legacy Prestige icons from across the series every 100 levels. The reward for reaching "Prestige Legend" is still listed as "[CLASSIFIED]."
One camo grind across every mode
MW4 uses a single camo grind shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and, from Season 1, Warzone, according to the blog:
- 8 Military camos per weapon, tied to Weapon Level.
- 3 Special camos per weapon. You unlock them with challenges that scale by mode (more kills in DMZ, where AI enemies count), and they join a shared pool.
- Completionist camos: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence.
- Mode Mastery camos. DMZ has Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio, and Warzone's set is still classified until Season 1.
- Weapon Prestige: maxing a gun lets you reset it for the evolving "Pyroclast" camo, up to Weapon Prestige Master Level 250.
Why DMZ Early Access matters for the grind
DMZ has its own 70-level track, which unlocks FOB stations, 3D Printer recipes and gear. DMZ XP also counts toward your main 1-55 level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP don't count toward DMZ. In other words, three days in Hajin before launch gives you a real head start on both your player level and your guns. Call of Duty Updates also flagged minor backend updates going out ahead of today's launch.
Not sure you qualify? Our DMZ Early Access explainer covers which digital editions and platforms get in. The FOB guide explains the base you'll be upgrading.
