GTA 6 Hasn't Gone Gold Yet: Rockstar Is Still Polishing One Month Before Launch
Grand Theft Auto VI is exactly one month from its November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it still hasn't "gone gold." As Notebookcheck reported on October 17, citing Jason Schreier's Bloomberg reporting, Rockstar is still fixing and refining the final build. That sounds scary. It isn't.
What "going gold" actually means
"Gold" is the final master build of a game: the version that gets sent to Sony and Microsoft for certification and becomes what players download on day one. (GTA VI boxes hold a download code, not a disc, per Rockstar Support.) Until a game goes gold, developers are still free to change it, fix bugs and tune systems.
For a game this size, being "not gold" four weeks out is normal. Per Notebookcheck, the build is expected to clear platform certification for PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S next month, close to the preload window.
What Rockstar said about the final stretch
Rockstar's director of technology, Phil Hooker, told Schreier that development keeps moving right up to the end:
- "The game's never completely settled. We never have an exact blueprint. Even within the last few months, we've changed things," Hooker said, as quoted by Notebookcheck.
- Hooker also said he once sat down to check a single mission and lost two hours just wandering into random encounters with pedestrians, cars and shops.
- Co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the studio rebuilt core systems for GTA VI and plans to keep them: "We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it's done, and we're not going to rip it apart."
In a Bloomberg video on October 17, Schreier added that Rockstar nearly doubled its workforce, worked to curb excessive overtime and believes its next big game could take less time to make. We covered the full Bloomberg feature in why GTA 6 took 8 years.
Why this is not a delay signal
- Nothing official has moved. Rockstar released the GTA VI Launch Trailer on October 15, two days before this report. Read our breakdown of the launch trailer and "Flower in a Hurricane".
- Preload is still set. Rockstar Support lists pre-loading from local midnight on November 12.
- Late polish is standard. Notebookcheck says plainly that the ongoing work does not by itself point to another delay. GTA VI already slipped once, from May 26 to November 19, 2026.
What's next: the GTA 6 timeline
- Now to early November: Rockstar keeps polishing; the build goes gold and heads into Sony and Microsoft certification.
- Around November 12: certification expected to wrap near the window when preloading opens on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- November 19, 2026: GTA VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
If Rockstar announces that the game has gone gold, we'll cover it the same day.
