GTA 6's NPC System Is Red Dead 2's, Evolved, and It Almost Never Reached Rockstar North's Boss

GTA 6's NPC System Is Red Dead 2's, Evolved, and It Almost Never Reached Rockstar North's Boss

The way you greet, insult or eavesdrop on strangers in GTA 6 goes back more than a decade, to a Red Dead Redemption 2 prototype that almost never got shown to the man running Rockstar North. GamesRadar+ reported on October 20, 2026 that the story comes from a new YouTube video by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, recorded after his visit to the studio.

It's the same trip that gave us the details on GTA 6's narrower roads and its weapon wheel. This time the subject is how Leonida's crowds react to you.

One button, two choices

According to GamesRadar+'s summary of the video, studio head Rob Nelson told Schreier that Rockstar's VP of animation, Mark Tennant, built a prototype of the idea back in 2014 or 2015. Pressing the button that normally aims your gun at someone could also let you greet or antagonize them.

It's easy to describe and very hard to build. Here's how GamesRadar+ tells it:

  • Tennant showed the prototype to technical lead Phil Hooker first.
  • Hooker didn't want Nelson to see it at first, because Nelson is known as the boss who "wants to do the world," even when that means a mountain of extra work.
  • Nelson saw it anyway and loved it: "This will revolutionize the way our games and our worlds work."

Hooker turned out to be right about the workload. The system shipped in Red Dead Redemption 2 and became one of its best-loved features.

Nelson: "We are taking it much further"

The other half of the story comes from Nelson himself. In IGN's big GTA 6 interview, he confirmed that "the NPC interaction system is one that is returning and evolved from Red Dead Redemption 2."

Nelson told IGN that in RDR2, holding L2 on an NPC with your gun holstered let you talk to them: greet them, antagonize them, or pull R2 to draw your weapon. Making those moments believable took work from design, code, animation and writing. In his words, the teams had to "become students of human behavior."

His teaser for GTA 6: "While we pushed this sort of interaction with NPCs as far as we could for Red Dead Redemption 2, with GTA 6 we are taking it much further."

Eavesdroppers beware

Nelson gave IGN one concrete example. Groups of pedestrians chat among themselves and you can stop and listen. But if you stand too close, they should notice that you're eavesdropping. As GamesRadar+ puts it, some locals will be curious, and others won't appreciate it at all.

All that chatter is written by the new team of writers, directors and producers in Los Angeles that Nelson told IGN about. We covered that team in our piece on GTA 6's pedestrian dialogue writers. Rockstar hasn't shown the full set of interaction options yet, so expect that to be one of the first things players test.

What's next

  • November 19, 2026: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Rockstar's pre-launch media push keeps adding details. IGN also reports that developers had room to slip in RDR2-style touches on their own. Catch up on the launch trailer while you wait.
